Quilt Assistant / Re: Naming?
« on: 12 April 2013, 07:56:30 »
You should be able to name the sections yourself without the automatic function. Things that might cause problems:

- the size of the design
- the complexity; it might contain a subtle flaw that the software stumbles on

You could try to make a very simple design to test with: 5" x 5" with a couple of straight lines. Name your sections manually, do a print preview and select the "Paper Piecing" tab (top left, next to "Templates"). That should work and show the basic principles.

Quilt Assistant / Re: Not Responding??
« on: 24 February 2013, 09:41:45 »
Hi,
As far as I know there are two possible reasons:

1. The design contains a lot of pieces (over a hundred). The software will have difficulty finding the correct order simply because there are so many possible combinations to consider. In this case you may want to wait a bit longer (e.g. a couple of minutes) before giving up.

2. There is some sort of flaw in the design that the software stumbles on. In this case it will run around in circles and never finish its attempt to name  the pieces.

If you can't find the cause and want me to look at this specific case, please sent me a private email with the design.

Hi,
You can get the estimated fabric usage as a printed overview, so go to menu "File" -> "Print", then select the "Fabric Usage" tab.
If you based your design on an image and get too many different fabric shades, you may need the "Edit" -> "Reduce Number of Colors" menu item to group similar shades together.

Yes, you can do that, but the software has no built-in way to get it done. What you want is a so-called PDF printer, which is a (free) piece of software that appears as another printer on your computer but creates PDF files of whatever you send it to print.
Here is an example: http://www.dopdf.com, but there are many more to be found.

The lines with the arrows are direction indicators. The arrow points towards the top of the shape, so you always know which side is up. The x's are alignment markers, useful when you need to match up seams of other shapes, but you probably don't need them in this case.

Glueing together: you probably printed a shape including seam allowance. The solid line shows the edge of the actual shape, the dotted line shows the seam allowance. Cut the shapes along the dotted lines, then find the "Glue edge #" sides and match those up. For each segment to glue together, you will need to cut 1 shape along the solid line (remove the seam allowance along that edge), then glue it onto the seam allowance of the other shape. This effectively makes sure that the solid edges of both shapes are on top of each other.

Hope this helps,

Hallo Gabi,

Quilt Assistant / Re: Reversing the Pattern?

Hi Barb,

There is no way to reverse the pattern itself, but you can print in reverse: use the "Mirrored Output" check box in the print dialog to make that choice.

Quilt Assistant / Re: how to view several blocks together

Hi Sarah,

Saving to the clipboard is easy. For the best result, first select the "Coloring" mode from the "Mode" menu (key C), then zoom the design to the size you want the copy to be, then select "Copy Design to Clipboard" from the "Edit" menu (key Ctrl-C).

Hallo Gartenspatz,

Was geht:

Gruss,
Arnout

Quilt Assistant / Re: Printing only part of a block
« on: 27 June 2011, 19:24:19 »
Hi Deborah,

Yes, you can print only those pieces you need. Before printing, first go to the "Select" mode (Menu Mode -> Select, or keyboard "S"). Then left-click on all the pieces you want to print (click and drag to speed this up), and right-click to remove pieces from the selection.

After making the selection, the print dialog will show the option to print only the selected pieces.

Quilt Assistant / Re: Image File cannot be opened
« on: 26 May 2011, 18:26:08 »
Hi Wendy,

The message ("The file could not be opened: ###") can safely be ignored. If you see a small preview of the image on the right, then the software did open the file and the message is meaningless. Just pretend it isn't there  ;)

General Discussion / Re: tutorials
« on: 11 March 2011, 08:51:52 »
Hi Linda,

You can find some tutorials on specific tasks in this section of the forums (look at page 2 as well). Other than that, please look at the PDF manual that comes with the software, it should help you get started. If it doesn't, suggestions for improvement are always welcome.

Quilt Assistant / Re: Download difficulties
« on: 26 January 2011, 19:21:20 »
Hi Virginia,

Please also try the German or Dutch links first. There used to be three different versions of the software, but I rolled all languages together into a single download, so these links also include the English language/manual.
If that doesn't work either, let me know so I can email the file to you instead.
