FabLib / Re: New to this . . .
« on: 14 November 2010, 17:08:12 »
Hi Patty,

No, there is no such thing as a universal "good" size. Best thing to do is judge the fabric itself: does it have a repeating pattern? If so, try to capture a single repeat, or a number of repeats if that is easier.

After you make the full scan, simply click and drag to make a selection within the image that Fablib shows to choose which part you want to keep. By default, this selection will be a square, but you can change that by clicking on the "Settings..."-button and uncheck "Force square selections".

Also, when you click "Fine Tuning", Fablib will show how your selected area looks when it is repeated.

Hope this helps,

Quilt Assistant / Re: I can't draw a simple circle!!
« on: 25 August 2010, 08:29:13 »
Hi Donna,

You didn't overlook anything, you are right about not being able to draw a simple circle. That may sound strange, but it helps to understand that QuiltAssistant is specifically designed to create patchwork patterns (as opposed to applique).
It doesn't "think" in lines, but in shapes. So every time you draw a line or curve, it will try to extend it to connect to existing lines, which divides the design into separate closed shapes.

A work-around: first draw a straight line, through the center of where you want the circle to be. Then draw two half circles, both starting and ending on that line. Afterwards, you can right-click on the line in the middle of the circle to remove it.

Also, you can't create shapes with holes in them (a limitation of the software). If you were able to draw a simple circle, you would do just that: create a surrounding shape with a circle-shaped hole in it.

There are many tools to help you align and connect everything properly, you can find more about that in the PDF manual.

Diese Linien mussen also genau aufeinander (s. Anlage).

QuiltAssistant / Les: Paper-piecing met QuiltAssistant, deel 2
« on: 22 November 2009, 12:09:41 »

Quilt Assistant / Tutorial: Paper piecing with QuiltAssistant, part 2
« on: 22 November 2009, 12:08:37 »
In the first part of this tutorial, you learned how to create your own Paper Piecing design. In this part, for which you need at least QuiltAssistant v2.20, you will learn how to quickly divide your design into numbered segments and make a perfect print-out.

To follow along, please download this example file of a pinguin (right-click on the text, then choose 'Save Target As...' to store the file pp-pinguin.qa2). When you open this file with QuiltAssistant, you should see this design:

We want to make it suitable for Paper Piecing as soon as possible, so go to the Edit menu and choose Name shapes for Paper Piecing.

When you do this, QuiltAssistant switches to Mode -> Naming and tries to find the best way to divide the design into segments and name all the pieces. Different segments are shown in different colors.

When you look at this result you will see some flaws, the segments aren't quite right. This is because there are some intentional mistakes in the design. Let's see if we can find them. Switch to Mode -> Edit (press the E key), then switch on Snap to Angle:

Now QuiltAssistant will show you the imperfections in the design:

The red circles show places where lines meet at a slight angle, instead of being straight. To correct the top-left problem, follow the line going left from that circle to the edge of the design. Click and drag the point on the edge to correct the angle of that line. When you get it right, QuiltAssistant will show red straight-line markers like so:

Knowing which points to move to fix these issues takes some practice and experience, but in this case you should only move points at the very edge of the design to fix the remaining problems.

When all circles are gone, we try Edit -> Name shapes for Paper Piecing again:

The result is better this time, but still not perfect. We will need to help QuiltAssistant manually to get all segments as they should be. First, right-click on the shape labeled A5 (top-right). From the menu, choose Move A5 to group B -> To B13.

Repeat this for the shape C5, right-click and choose Move C5 to group B -> To B14. Now the design should be ready for printing, looking like this:

Choose File -> Print, then click on the tab Paper Piecing to print the segments:

Quilt Assistant / Re: Using snap to angle question
« on: 19 August 2009, 22:04:28 »
Hi Doris,

If you just click on the snap-to-angle button, QuiltAssistant should snap to angles in steps of 15 degrees, or whichever setting you chose earlier for your project.
To choose a specific angle, use to drop-down menu by clicking on the small triangle to the right of the button:

The closest to 60 degrees in the list would be 30. Alternatively, you can click on 'Custom...'. With that, a dialog will appear where you can set the exact angles you want at the bottom. The small square shows a preview of the angles you selected. For 60 degrees, you would want a "Step" of 60 and a "Base angle" of either 0 or 30 in most cases.

Hope that helps,
Arnout

Hi Doris,

Glad to hear you found your own way. I don't think the concentric circles were a bad idea, though there are probably many ways to draw a Mariner's Compass. A lot of symmetry in there, so a great block to try all the different symmetry tools on to speed things up (or to make a mess really quickly if you're not careful  :) ).
I did one with 20 points many years ago, before I wrote this program, but I'm sure no mariner would want to use that for a compass...

Quilt Assistant / Quilt Assistant v2.10
« on: 14 May 2009, 20:56:06 »
It took a while, but here it is: the new version of Quilt Assistant8)

A short summary of the most important changes:
  • Drawing and changing curved lines is now much easier
  • You can make and save your own color palette with each design
  • Print a list of used fabric colors and estimated usage
  • Export to a vector drawing (EMF/WMF)
  • A new file format, that older versions can not read! Should you have any problems reading older projects, please let me know.

You can read the rest here or in the manual, or you can just go ahead and try it for yourself...

Algemeen / Re: quiltkampioenschap Veldhoven

Hallo Mia,

Groetjes,
Arnout

QuiltAssistant / QuiltAssistant v2.10
« on: 14 May 2009, 20:25:36 »

Quilt Assistant / Re: Paper Piece ?
« on: 17 March 2009, 20:15:28 »
Sure you can. I'd start with an empty block, then set the Snap to Angle to 45°, and Symmetry to 2 rotations. Then you can draw both edges of the striped area in one go and be sure the block lines up on all sides. Leave to those settings on to draw perfectly aligned stripes, or switch them of to make more of a "crazy patchwork" filling.

General Discussion / Re: Log Cabin Stars
« on: 16 February 2009, 08:24:25 »
It shouldn't be too hard, even if you haven't done much patchwork before. Here are a couple of links describing different techniques:

Log Cabin @ quilting.about.com
Log Cabin @ equilters.com

Can't tell you much more about it, since I never actually made a Log Cabin block...

FabLib / Re: Fine Tuning ?
« on: 15 February 2009, 09:33:55 »
Sorry, there is no user manual, as I hoped that experimenting would indeed show you what does what. Try following the first 2 steps shown on the 'Scanner' or 'Image/File' tab, i.e. open/scan an image and click-and-drag to make a selection inside that image. Now you should see a tiled example under fine tuning, which you can use to align/scale the fabrics swatch to make it tile as neatly as possible.
